"Just like driving a really big Pinto," except Sandra Bullock's character from the 1994 flick Speed wasn't referring to the handling characteristics of the GM New Look bus that will now, a quarter-century later, head to auction among more than two dozen other screen-used cars, trucks, and motorcycles.Buses tend to blend into the background or serve as mere settings in most movies, but the central (some critics with no aesthetic sense might say "shaky") premise of Speed required a big transit bus running around Los Angeles at no less than 50 miles per hour.To fill that role, the film's producers wrangled up to a dozen mid-Sixties GM "fishbowl" TDH-5303 40-foot buses and painted them in liveries approximating, though not replicating, the Big Blue Bus livery of the Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines.
