USAF Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II "WARTHOG" Ground Attack Aircraft - 75th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group, Bagram AFB, Afghanistan, 2011 1/72 Scale Diecast Model Plane
Product Dimensions: 9 x 9.5 x 2.25 in.
Model History and Information: As the war in Vietnam raged, it became abundantly clear to key US military advisors that a close-in ground attack aircraft was needed to help provide Close Air Support (CAS) to troops in contact on the ground. The A-10 Thunderbolt II emerged as the answer and was one of the first aircraft of its kind to be designed around the main 30mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon gatling gun. In addition to the cannon, missiles and bombs can be placed under each wing for engaging enemy armored vehicles like tanks, making the A-10 one of the most feared planes in the world. The Warthog has served with distinction in every major conflict since the 1970's and is scheduled to remain in service with the USAF for decades to come.
