Trans World Airlines (TWA) was the second airline to order and take delivery of the Boeing 747-100. Beginning December 31, 1969, a total of 19 new 747-100s were delivered to TWA from Boeing. In February 1970, TWA became the first airline to fly the Boeing 747 on a U.S. domestic route, the New York-to-Los Angeles route.

This model represents ship N93101 in its original delivery colors. It was the first 747-100 ordered by TWA and the 5th built by Boeing. It had its first flight on July 13, 1969, however, it was not delivered to TWA until August 18, 1970. The "Double Globe" livery was the current TWA livery from 1964 to 1975.

The 747-100 entered commercial service in 1970. Initially, engines were available only from Pratt & Whitney, but by 1975 engines were also available from General Electric and Rolls-Royce. Boeing delivered 250 of the 747-100s, the last in 1986. Boeing built two versions of the 747-100 passenger airplane, one of which had a higher payload capacity and was known as the -100B. The 747-100 was also available as a short-range (SR) airplane, which had a modified body structure to accommodate a greater number of takeoffs and landings. The 747SR model typically was used by airlines on short flights with a high-passenger capacity, as many as 550.
