The Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is the world's largest airborne observatory. SOFIA is a Boeing 747SP fitted with a German-built, 17-ton, 106-inch diameter (2.7 meter) infrared telescope in the rear of the aircraft.

When flying science missions, SOFIA operates between 39,000 and 45,000 feet, which is above more than 99 percent of the water vapor in Earth's atmosphere. Using a suite of seven purpose-built instruments, one per mission, SOFIA observes the universe in the infrared spectrum between wavelengths of 0.3 and 1,600 microns, a broader range than any other observatory on the ground or in space. 

SOFIA's suite of instruments will enable astronomers to look at galaxies and the Milky Way's galactic center, focusing on starburst history and the motions of the star around supermassive black holes; the Milky Way's interstellar material is recycled; details of the formation of stars and planets, especially massive stars, and the chemistry and dynamics of planet-forming disks; and observations of comets, near-Earth asteriods, the planet Venus, and Saturn's moon Titan.
