Delta Air Lines, the launch customer for the 767-400ER, placed an order for 21 of the airplanes in 1997. The first 767-400ER was delivered to Delta on August 11, 2000 and on October 1, the airline put its first 767-400ER into revenue service on a flight from Atlanta, Georgia to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
In 2009 Delta began repainting its Boeing 767-400 aircraft in their new livery which was introduced in 2007. In addition to the new look on the outside the interiors of these planes were upgraded to include a new seating arrangement for their Business Elite class with a new four-across (1-2-1) layout with 78-inch flat bed seats. The Boeing 767-400ER is the latest development of the twin-engine wide-body 767 family. Its fuselage is stretched 21ft (6.4m) longer than the 767-300. The wings have advanced raked wingtips that improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the aircraft. Its advanced flightdeck has six multifunction color displays, which can present information in the same format as for earlier 767s or for the 777 and Next Generation 737s, allowing for common type certificates.
